I think payout goes back to what you learned as a beginner racer and that tends to stick. When "Arrow" and I were racing we agreed early to split 50/50. After several races I was nearly $300 dollars ahead of him and I was getting sore about it until I was sick and weak at Memorial weekend. "Arrow" kicks ass in the Melon and Moline and wins several hundred dollars and even ups with me (good team-mate!). On the flip side, "Smoking Larry" was always with a hand out for winnings when we were teammates. A few times it felt like I was paying the mob. It was probably well spent money. One, Larry never gave me any trouble and two, if I asked him to, he would tear your head off and shit down your neck (and you know he could do it!)!

Bike racing is not welfare. You have to do something NOW or in the NEAR future to get paid.

I just split because it's easier to do. I've ruined a couple of friendships earlier in my life over a few dollars. That money that was oh so important then is now gone but the bad memory lingers.

These intrinsic things to us who are long in the saddle tooth are not so apparent to the new comer. One would think not chasing your teammate is obvious but that is obviously not so. I see Mesa and Big Shark do it weekly. Keep talking to this guy, it’s the best way. This same person has turned down money from me after a race so that stick won’t work.
